Paramus no match for Haledon

In yet another come from behind win Haledon missed not one, but two penalty kicks and at least a half a dozen glorious scoring chances, yet still managed to punish the visitors with four unanswered goals. It was not always a pretty affair, but at the end the victory solidified their top spot in the standings before facing two other powerhouses: Livingston and AC Rosso in the upcoming weeks.

Paramus came to Haledon without registering a single victory this season and from the first whistle they looked as if they would be thrilled to come back home with a tie. But a rare miscommunication error on Haledon defense's part resulted in a goal for the visitors just 15 minutes into the first half. This seemed to rattle confidence of the hosts, who - for most of the first stanza - were not able to create any clear opportunities for an equalizer. Luckily Paramus returned the favor with 10.mins left in the half, when Matt Huebner scored from a close range after both the defender and goalie failed to clear the ball away from the box.

Haledon could put another one on the board minutes later, but Sebastian Penk's shot was saved by the goalie and Paweł Bajon's volley hit the crossbar. But the best chance was squandered by Greg Rehberger, who failed to convert a penalty kick awarded for the faul on Doug Shelley. Rehberger's shot was well-placed, but did not have enough steam and Paramus' goalie was able to make a diving save.

However this game was not meant to end in a tie, because in the second 45.mins Haledon came out hungry for goals. After missing a couple of chances it was Jake Witek, whose brilliant feed allowed Tomek Moczerniuk to score his third of the season in a one-on-one situation to break the tie. Minutes later Moczerniuk had two more glorious chances to put this one away, but both times was inexplicably denied by the visitors' substitute keeper. Paramus netminder, who for the entire first half played on the left side of the midfield, came in and played surprisingly well saving some more efforts by Bajon, Witek and Penk. But his biggest save came in with 5.mins left, when Witek - who prior to that was pulled down in the box - could not beat him from the penalty spot. Saving two penalties in one game does not happen that often, hence Paramus players immediately went on to congratulate the fortunate goalie and as a result allowed Rehberger to put in a rebound and redeem himself for the miss in the first half!

Such an odd turn of events got the visitors disoriented, which allowed Haledon to score one more in dying minutes. And once again it was Witek, who was in the midst of things providing a nice service to Penk from the right wing. Polish midfielder had no problems heading in his third of the season.

Despite five wins in five matches Haledon lost its first spot in the stands to Livingston, who scored 5 goals on the weekend to stay perfect on the season. Both teams will clash in a highly anticipated match-up a week after the State Cup game play, which takes place this weekend.
