NJSL: Haledon shows spirit, win streak reaches four

Thrille(r) in Denville! Haledon goes on top of the NJSL NJ Div table after their second come-from-behind win of the season! Biggest contributors in this one were the Rehberger brothers, who collected one helper apiece and the members of the Polish Contingent: Bajon, who put two on the board and Penk, who scored a game-winner with 3 minutes left in the game.

This game featured a match-up between two unbeaten, high-scoring teams. Both Furies and Haledon came into this game having scored 6 goals apiece last week and looked to continue their offensive prowess. Haledon came out strong and created a couple of good chances, but it was the hosts, who took a 1:0 lead after Vincenzo Stampone’s unfortunate gaffe. The congenial manager and part-time frontman of squawBrook (see picture below) returned to the team after recovering from a knee injury last season and was forced to make a rare appearance as a goalie in absence of Matt Kastner.

Furies, who were solid in the back and dangerous up front, but weak in the middle doubled their lead after another dreadful error by Haledon’s last frontier, which allowed Denville’s striker to launch a rocket into the net from just a couple of yards out.

Stampone rocks as a goalie as well
Haledon found themselves in an unfamiliar territory – being down two goals before the halftime. But they continued with their game plan in the second stanza knowing that all they needed to be back in business was just one goal. Their wish was granted 10.min after the break. Gregg Rehberger, who had a very solid outing, took a free kick inches away from the left corner of the penalty box. His cross flew above towering heads of Furies’ center defensemen and found Paweł Bajon, who calmly headed in his third of the season.

That indeed was the spark Haledon needed. Minutes later they leveled the score with yet another brilliant strike by Bajon. He took a throw-in pass from his fellow Pole Tomek Moczerniuk inside of the box, turned with the ball and pounded it into the net over the shoulder of Denville’s goalie.

Furies were reeling and Haledon smelled blood. They increased their pressure on the hosts and came close to scoring a few times. And then they got some help from the referee, who first issued a yellow card to a Furies goalie for a delay of game and seconds later ejected him for… applauding his first decision. Dismissal of Furies’ netminder turned out to be the turning point of the game. With Furies being on the ropes and hoping to salvage a point Haledon delivered their knock-out punch. With 3.min left before the final whistle Mike Rehberger from the right flank delivered an excellent cross, which found Sebastian Penk on the receiving end. A third member of the Polish Contingent had a wide open net and no problems with heading in a game winning goal.

Furies were furious, but it was not only the referee’s verdict, which cost them a game. Deep into the injury time they had a final chance to draw level, but they were denied by Stampone, who redeemed himself for the first-half blunder and Jerry Kurlandski, who for the whole game was utterly unstoppable. Haledon – despite the windy weather, poor pitch condition and shorter than usually bench – outplayed and out-battled Furies for their fourth win in a row.

Can their hot streak continue? It is to be determined on Sunday, Oct 23rd at 8:00am when they take on Paramus at Roe Street Field.
