Haledon beats Grashopper to win third in a row

Doug Shelley had a goal and two assists in Haledon's 6:2 win over Grasshopper Too at Roe Street Field on Sunday. For the second game in a row the hosts put on a scoring clinic and their winning streak has now reached three games.

Durning opening moments of the game the Grasshopper's team was just as advertised: green, quick and jumpy. They surprised the hosts with taking over the posession of the ball. But in football it is goals that count more than anything else and Haledon once again wasted no time to open the scoring tab. A couple of minutes into the first half Gregg Rehberger took a shot from behind the box, which caused all sorts of problems for the visitor's goalie. He came up with the initial diving save, but could not stop Mike Mete's rebound.

A few moments later Haledon increased the lead. Doug Shelly passed the ball to Jake Witek on the left side. The Polish Tasmanian Devil cut inside and took a low shot, which somehow squeezed into the net between the post and goalie's outstreched hands.

To their credit two quickly conceded goals did not rattle the Grasshoppers, who found a goal on their own midway through the first stanza. But Haledon was not done either. First, after a brilliant counterattack, Pawel Bajon found Shelley in the box, who rounded past goalie, but had no room for a shot, hence gave it back to Mete, who pounded in his second strike of the game. Just before the halftime whistle Bajon and Shelley connected once again. After a sneaky feed from the Polish Bald Eagle Haledon's blond midfielder scored his second of the season.

A three goal cushion was more than plenty for Haledon to take control of the game and tempo in the second half. The visitors were able to put one more goal on the board, but their hopes to get any closer were squashed by quick tallies by Tomek Moczerniuk, who beat the goalie twice in one-on-one situations. First goal came off the feed from Witek and the second was a result of a sweet, overhead pass from Omar Arango.

With the win Haledon improved their record to 3-0-0 and return to action on Sunday, Oct 16, when they travel to Denville to take on also undefeated Furies.
